On 29th December, 1914, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division moved into the front line north-east of Wulverghem in Belgium. On 1st January, 1915, the British guns heavily shelled the German trenches opposite to which the enemy replied in kind and a large shell fell in the support trench held by A Company, burying five men. Charles Owen and another man rushed to dig them out but another large shell exploded nearby causing the other man to stop but Private Owen continued the work and was dragging one of the buried men out when a third shell fell blowing him to bits. |
